SEO and title tags

One of the most important things you can do to make your website more visible on the web is make use of the title tag!

For any web professionals reading this they know what I mean by title tags, but for those of you who don’t I’m referring to part of the code in a web page that gives it it’s (you guessed it!) title.

This title doesn’t appear in the main body of the web page but appears in the top right hand corner of your web browser (see below).

It’s this title tag that lets the search engine know what the page is all about. I can’t tell you how many times I see websites that have the company name at the title on all the pages in the site. This is pointless. Unless you have a very common company name your site will rank in the search engines for that anyway. The title tag should be relevant to the page content and what your are trying to promote.

Another thing I see a lot is title tags such as ‘home’,  ‘about us’, contact us’ etc. This tell the user/search engine nothing about the page. A more meaningful title would be ‘About ACME and our cleaning widgets’.

Not only will using meaning title tags help promote your website it will make the web easier to navigate for all of us. So get on you your web designer now and find out how to sort out your title tags.
